What gets scheduled, gets managed

I had no idea there was such a thing as National Planner Day, but there is!  And, I can't tell you how much it thrills my soul! I love the feel of a new planner in my hands! What is your favorite type of planner to use?

While there are online options that help plan our days (like Trello, for example), I prefer the pen to paper method. I love color-coding things and marking things off my to-do list. I love actually turning the page to a new week, a new month. I love being able to flip back and see what I did when and what I have accomplished.

Having a planner (online or paper), helps you manage your schedule so your schedule doesn't end up managing you. It helps you be proactive, not reactive. Remember, what gets scheduled gets managed. You are more productive. For more in-depth information on several different productivity methods, click here.

Planners aren't just for adults. According to the National Planner Day website, new research shows that students who take notes on paper actually learn and retain more than those who use laptops.

The reason is that handwriting:

  • Engages different parts of your brain.

  • Forces you to more fully process your thinking.

  • Creates more and better memory cues for later recall.

  • Gives you an edge in understanding and remembering concepts.

My kids start school next week. I am letting them each pick out a planner this weekend. And some colorful pens and highlighters.
